In the current crisis of the pandemic, lifestyle has changed for many. With the rise of disposable masks and rubber gloves, it is common for these products to be utilized in combatting COVID-19. Though it is a very necessary step to protect yourself and others with masks and gloves, is society taking the correct approach? With the excessive use of disposable products, I think no.

Rise of Plastic pollution

Because of the pandemic, there is a predicted twofold increase of single-use plastic items (such as disposable masks and gloves) plus these numbers are significantly rising with the continued overconsumption, excessive use, and mismanagement of disposable products. The pandemic shifted the focus to public health but left environmental concerns in the dust with several national and state-wide agreements on the use and consumption of plastics being overturned. All these factors have led to a rapidly increasing amount of plastic pollution on our oceans.

Essential Protection

It is essential during this time to use methods of personal protective equipment such as face masks and gloves to prevent virus transmission. However, we also must consider correct handling and proper disposal of these items. Though it is vital to discard of these items properly, it is also crucial to avoid creating large amounts of trash that with contribute directly to plastic pollution. The move to the use of reusable masks is a current must! It is the most sustainable option to purchase a certified reusable cloth mask that is washable and recyclable. By making this choice, one is choosing to protect the community, the environment, and the ocean.

Fashion of Masks

Reusable masks are not only the best option to be eco-friendly, but they also allow for expression as does clothing! A cloth face mask can elevate an outfit while being safe in a sustainable way. With patterns, sayings, or custom designs on face masks allow for powerful self-expression and adds to an aesthetic. Face masks can make someone feel cute, cool, mysterious and increase self-esteem.

Future of Face Masks

I think use of reusable cloth face masks should continue after the pandemic. There are no down sides! It is continuing to be health conscious towards the public while being fashionable. I predict that many of the younger generations will adapt cloth face masks into their everyday fashion to be safe and add to their own personal style. I know I will!
